You know who you are. You’re the procrastinator, the 80-hours-a-week worker or the forgetful friend. Or you’re an adrenaline junkie who thrives on the pressure to get it all done in one (or two) days. Whoever you are, you know it’s T-minus 48 hours before Christmas and you’re scrambling like a reindeer with it’s nose cut off.
The good news is that judging by the panicked mobs of shoppers this time of year, you fit right in with the rest of us. And if you live in or around Kansas City, you’re in luck. For on every corner exists a plethora of great shops that provide you with one (or two) parking spaces in the entire lot. Yay for walking a half mile!
Plus, there’s this list. We’ve done all the hard work by searching for deals in several shopping districts that allow you to get it done all at once. No matter who you’re buying for — the hipster, the spoiled child, the picky friend, the inevitably disappointed in-law — this list will give you options that will wow even the weirdest of loved ones.
And in this community of last-minuters, we encourage any additions to this list in the comments below. Have a Happy Holidays, and get ‘er done!
1. Downtown Overland Park Shopping District
This is every hipster’s haven — where artisan, hand-crafted and Fair Trade shops line the streets. Shops like Ten Thousand Villages have it all; from accessories like scarves and jewelry, to kitchenware and home accents. Even though Ten Thousand Villages prices are totally reasonable, they also have an awesome clearance section so you can save a few bucks.
And while you’re over there, stop by the Culinary Center of Kansas City, where you can pick up a Dinners on Demand frozen meal made by master chefs. They’re just like Hungry-Man dinners, only the food is real and the salt intake won’t bloat you like Santa after a night of binging on milk and cookies.
Actually, you know what? Why don’t you just grab some Downtown Overland Park gift cards? Most of the shops accept them, and you’ve made everyone happy while doing the absolute bare minimum. Voila.
2. Brookside Shopping District
This Kansas City shopping district is another great example of shopping small. And by small, we mean small businesses. Even though these places are local, there’s nothing small about the dozens of shops and restaurants you can visit to check off everyone on your list. Need to shop for a nerd you know? Head to Brookside Toy & Science, a mom-and-pop shop that’s been encouraging smarts since 1964. The nice thing is, you can check out its catalogue before you even step foot outside. Within walking distance are more artisan, hand-crafted shops, which will be sure to please your super right-brained friends.
3. The Garment District
Last on the local businesses list, this area is wrapping up its 12 Days of Garment deals at clothing and accessories boutiques December 23rd and 24th. If you get to Two Chic Blvd on the 23rd, you’ll get 25 percent off accessories and gifts. If you can’t make it till the 24th, and you need to buy for several people, you’ll get 20 percent off when you spend $300 or more at any of the shops in the district. That’s up to $60 off … SIXTY!*
*Check the math on that. We’re writers here, people.
4. The Legends
Wooing you away from the bazillion other shopping areas around town might be considered a ‘legendary feat’ (wah-wah), but this shopping district has just about convinced us. With deals like 50-60 percent off the entire store at The Gap Outlet and discounts for members of the military, being a procrastinator will save you big time. Plus, the over-the-top holiday decorations will make you feel like you’re wrapped in one big Christmas hug, effectively turning you from scrooged to enthused. Check out the rest of the deals now.
5. Town Center Plaza
The Leawood shopping center has a ton of last-minute deals going on. Some of the stores include Brooks Brothers, Charming Charlie, Bath & Body Works and probably a bunch of other places with amazingly awesome alliteration (see what we did there?). All the sales are good through the 23rd, and for the extreme cases of last-minute shopping, some are even good through Christmas Eve day. So, uh, we’re guessing we’ll see you there.
