It’s hard to imagine the kind of nightmare that newly 15-year-old Anna Sorel has been living for the past few months. A gymnast on the Olathe Northwest team, Anna was warming up on the uneven bars when she fell, just weeks into her freshman year of high school. The accident fractured her spinal cord, paralyzing her from the waist down. Anna had surgery the morning after her injury and is now fighting her way through rehab with all of the strength, grace and determination that you’d expect from a gymnast.
Anna’s family and friends quickly mobilized to help out in any way possile, putting together a Youcaring crowdfunding page to help out with her medical bills and a community page, Pray for Annaboo, on Facebook to keep everyone informed of her progress. A dedicated group called Anna’s Angels has gotten together to boost the fundraising efforts and help Anna and her family out as they work through her recovery.
On Saturday night, November 14th, Mazuma was able to help out Anna’s cause by hosting a silent auction and a benefit concert at our Overland Park headquarters, played by the awesome Kansas-based band FlipSide. With a silent auction in the Community Room and a rock concert taking advantage of the atrium acoustics, it was a wild, and wildly successful, night.
Even better: Anna was able to join the party!
We are thrilled that roughly 300 supporters came to enjoy the evening and help Anna and her family out. They dug deep into their pockets as well – the event raised over $15,500!
We can’t take credit for the amazing hard work that Anna’s friends and family put in. We’re just thrilled we were able to host the event and do our part to help out.
