This past week, one lucky Mazuman has had the enviable job of bringing donations in the form of comically oversized checks to a trio of organizations that we absolutely love. Here are the travels of Jason, our Mazuman, over the past week, plus the details of how the money was raised:
Check 1: A Salsa Competition for CASA
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. These are the amazing people who stand up for kids in the court system, making sure that these kids’ best interests are understood and represented. So for kids in the foster system or who are dealing with awful divorces and custody battles and everything beyond, these people are heroes.
Meanwhile, at Mazuma, we had a salsa competition. (Please note: this was a food competition rather than a dance competition, as we didn’t want anyone to inadvertently break their ankle on company time.) Every available Mazuman was able to buy tickets to taste the salsa, and then give their tickets to their favorite salsa in the competition. So Mazumans got to stuff their faces with deliciousness, and CASA got all the proceeds. Win-win.
Check total: $150
Check #2: Cupcakes for Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City
Recently, a group of Mazumans from our Culture Crew decided that we needed to hold a cupcake competition to work alongside our employee wellness program. And so one Friday, many, many people brought in their home baked cupcakes to try: everything from double chocolate to strawberry lemonade to sweet corn and BBQ.
No lies, that sweet corn BBQ cupcake was a beautiful thing.
The set up worked the same way as the salsa competition: purchase tickets to try cupcakes, give tickets to your favorite cupcake, most tickets won. All proceeds this time went to the amazing Ronald McDonald House, because if there were ever people who needed a cupcake in their life, it’s the families who need a place to stay while their children are receiving major medical treatment.
Check total: $175
Check #3: Kids Helping Kids at Spofford House
Take Your Child to Work Day is a big deal at Mazuma – we organize a full day of activities for the kids, balancing learning about the credit union with Lego and frisbee time to let them have some fun. We also helped them set up a series of food stations at lunch time. Stations served everything from slices of pizza to fruit and dirt cups (those wonderful messes of pudding and Oreo crumbs) (we really do have a wellness program here!). The food cost $1-3. Kids were able to collect cash, break larger bills, and keep track of what they sold over a two hour period.
The kids, being awesome, decided they wanted to donate all the money from lunch to help the kids at Spofford Home, the amazing place that provides therapeutic treatment for child victims of abuse and neglect – the kids can even live there when their home situations warrant it.
Way to learn the credit union model of people helping people, tiny Mazumans!
